Álava was crowned Miss Earth 2011 by Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria on December 3, 2011 at the University of the Philippines Theatre in Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines.

Álava is the first woman from Ecuador to win Miss Earth.

Álava presented an environmental project to protect mangroves in Ecuador and has also become a spokesperson for the protection of the natural reserve of Yasuní. During the gala, she told the jury that "education is the best solution for the environment because children are the ones that preserve the earth for future generations", in response to the final question. She will reign over the next twelve months, after winning the pageant that participated by 84 countries in which the delegates of Latin America accounted for three of the top four.

The Ecuadorian model's achievement was an improvement from Ecuador's placement in 2010 where Jennifer Pazmiño placed second in Miss Earth 2010 which was held in Vietnam. She becomes a spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Caroline Medina 19 years of age and who represented the state of Aragua in the Miss Venezuela 2010, he went to Manila Philippines to represent our country in international competition dedicated to Miss Earth environmental conservation.

Medina traveled with five suitcases full of clothing requested by the competition and carefully chosen by Mr. Osmel Sousa, president of the Miss Venezuela Organization and Ms. Maria Kallay, General Coordinator. Suits led Venezuelans among different designers who emphasize Ninal Nohaied and Hector Silva.

Caroline also has a luggage environmental project based on the element Earth, every year the competition above and choose an environmental element on it, each participant should bring a project. Earth 2010 Miss Venezuela was one called "vertical garden", a new option for the greening of vertical spaces in urban areas where open spaces have been very limited.

"When I was a young girl, instead of playing with dolls, I would always play outside. My best friend and I would play together all the time. On weekends my father liked to go hiking so his routine rubbed off on me. What environmental project will you create to promote the protection of Mother Earth and why?
Although Environmental regulations are becoming stricter, being able to properly enforce those regulations is extremely important. Future generations don't only need to be able to enforce those restrictions but also, they need to understand why the restrictions are there in the first place. I plan to create a project that will allow Korea's children to be able to further interact with nature more intensively than they do today. I hope that this will inspire them and foster in them a love for mother Earth at a young age.

What makes you proud of the country you are representing, and what can you promote about your country?
I am proud to represent Korea because of its rich culture, wonderful history and my people's great devotion to protect the environment. Korea has an excellent public transportation system, and its citizens are taught from a young age to recycle. Since space is limited in Korea we must learn to use what we have, and the Korean people have become exceedingly efficient at it. Korea also has an excellent education system with over 83% of students attending a college or university after high school.

Describe your childhood/growing years.

I always liked to travel. I also loved animals. One time, I tried to raise chickens, and when the chicks died I held a memorial service for them.

What is your environmental advocacy?
Climate change is the most serious threat to the Earth as we know it. Realistically, most natural disasters are difficult to prevent. So, in order to lessen our burden on the planet, we must look toward alternative/renewable sources of energy. The damage caused by consumption of fossil fuels is astounding. More funding and research should be put into alternative forms of energy including bio fuels and hydrogen fuel cells. Though nuclear energy is a decent alternative, incidents such as the Fukushima disaster show that we can't totally rely on nuclear or other cheap forms of energy. Proper investment and funding must be put into alternative fuels so that humans can lower their dependence on energy sources that are harmful to our environment.
