This event will be held in Indonesia, the host cities are Jakarta and Palembang. The Opening Ceremony - The Southeast Asian Games officially return to Indonesia today as Sriwijaya Stadium in Palembang hosts the opening ceremony.

Indonesia last hosted the Games in 1997. That was also the last time it finished atop the medals table, and its goal is to reclaim first place.

Almost all of the 15,900 athletes and officials from 11 countries have arrived in co-hosts Palembang and Jakarta. With some venues being finished as late as this week and unable to host test events, it’s time to see whether Indonesia’s organizing committee (Inasoc) can put those problems to rest and run the Games smoothly.

“We have answered all the critics and defied all the odds with our hard work. Now Jakabaring [Sports City] is ready to present the Games to the world,” South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said on Thursday.

First impressions are the most important, and Inasoc has promised a grand opening ceremony. Tonight’s festivities, which begin at 7 p.m., will cost an estimated Rp 150 billion ($16.8 million).

Pyrotechnics, lasers and fireworks will light up the ceremony, while 3,000 and Southeast Asian pop stars Agnes Monica (Indonesia), Jaclyn Victor (Malaysia) and K.C. Concepcion (Philippines) will take to the stage.

“The lasers and fireworks are designed by a US company that was also involved in the 1994 [football] World Cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies,” Inasoc deputy chairman Indra Yudhistira said. “This will be the grandest opening ceremony in the Games’ history.”

UPDATE November 20, 2011 2:46PM: The 26th Southeast Asian Games will be held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia in November 2011. Indonesia's fourth time to host the SEA Games, it last hosted the Games in 1997. Parallel to the SEA Games, the 6th ASEAN ParaGames for physically disabled athletes, begins 2 weeks after the SEA Games ends, with competition to be held in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java, Indonesia.

11 elf tour will take part in this event. There are Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Brunei, Timor Leste. The winner of previous SEA Games is Thailand. SEA Games 2009 hosted in Laos.

The opening ceremony of the 26th SEA Games titled “Sriwijaya A Golden Peninsula” a magnificent sporting event marks the biggest sporting event in South East Asia in Sriwijaya Gelora, Jakabaring Sports Complex, Palembang, Indonesia on Friday, November 11, 2011.

Grandeur and sparkling opening ceremony of the SEA Games 2011 was charming for a while dispelled any doubt that the implementation of the prestigious sporting event will take place perfunctory.
History may also be noted, that the SEA Games opening ceremony in Palembang (Indonesia) is among the most spectacular and grandest in the history of the implementation of the SEA Games.

The event is well also confirm that although was oversized in its preparation, Palembang and Jakarta are fully ready to host the SEA Games 2011.

President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, who was sitting on the tribune honorary seemed happy and closely watched the opening ceremony pomp of the 26th SEA Games.

Even though with some 16,000 spectators they seemed enthusiastic and impressed with that event, although in part the implementation of the ceremony heavy rains flushed Sriwijaya stadium.

The President stated that the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games event is a real step to strengthen the togetherness the countries in Southeast Asia, particularly in the field of sports.

The 26th SEA Games held in Jakarta and Palembang on 11-22 November 2011 started a series of activities of ASEAN in late 2011. At 17 to 19 November 2011 in Bali will be held Summit, which was attended by the ASEAN heads of state / government of ten ASEAN member countries.

Indonesia four times to host the biggest sporting event in South East Asia, namely in 1979, 1987, 1997 and 2011. 26th SEA Games is the biggest SEA Games ever held, attended by 11 ASEAN member countries, with the number of athletes reach 12,000 people. They will compete in 44 sports and 545 gold medal fights.
