The Opening Ceremony - The Southeast Asian Games officially return to Indonesia today as Sriwijaya Stadium in Palembang hosts the opening ceremony.
Indonesia last hosted the Games in 1997. That was also the last time it finished atop the medals table, and its goal is to reclaim first place.
Almost all of the 15,900 athletes and officials from 11 countries have arrived in co-hosts Palembang and Jakarta. With some venues being finished as late as this week and unable to host test events, it’s time to see whether Indonesia’s organizing committee (Inasoc) can put those problems to rest and run the Games smoothly.
“We have answered all the critics and defied all the odds with our hard work. Now Jakabaring [Sports City] is ready to present the Games to the world,” South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said on Thursday.
First impressions are the most important, and Inasoc has promised a grand opening ceremony. Tonight’s festivities, which begin at 7 p.m., will cost an estimated Rp 150 billion ($16.8 million).
Pyrotechnics, lasers and fireworks will light up the ceremony, while 3,000 and Southeast Asian pop stars Agnes Monica (Indonesia), Jaclyn Victor (Malaysia) and K.C. Concepcion (Philippines) will take to the stage.
“The lasers and fireworks are designed by a US company that was also involved in the 1994 [football] World Cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies,” Inasoc deputy chairman Indra Yudhistira said. “This will be the grandest opening ceremony in the Games’ history.”
